Supporting you to prevent homelessness

THE NATIONAL PRACTITIONER
SUPPORT SERVICE (NPSS)

WELCOME TO THE NPSS NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2017

The NPSS National Conference 2017 took place on 4th and 5th July at the University of Warwick in Coventry. As with previous events, the theme of 2017’s conference was designed to support local authorities and their partners to enhance their front line housing services with a clear focus on the benefits of an early intervention and prevention focused approach to housing options.

In September 2016, the National Practitioner Support Service was invited to give evidence to the Select Committee in relation to the Homelessness Reduction Bill. Members were particularly interested to hear from NPSS in relation to the bespoke programme of theoretical and skills based training that the team provides to local authorities in England which has seen over 5000 local authority delegates trained since the commencement of the Gold Standard programme in April 2013. In addition to this, Members recognised the role that NPSS plays in supporting local authority housing options and homelessness departments to implement and enhance prevention focused services for all customer groups.

The implementation of the Homelessness Reduction Act was a key focus for our 2017 conference with a particular emphasis on the forthcoming legislative changes, developing strong partnerships and increasing housing supply. 2017’s conference was an opportunity to share good practice, network with colleagues and hear from a variety of experts in the sector; including local authorities who have achieved the 10 Local Challenges. Keynote sessions, workshops and masterclasses, whilst thought provoking, were delivered in an environment designed to support delegates to get the most from their conference experience.

Best wishes

NPSS NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2017

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Feedback from NPSS conferences to date has been hugely positive with 99% of delegates rating the conference as ‘good’, ‘very good’ or ‘excellent.’ The conference has become the chosen event for local authority housing practitioners to attend due to its focus on supporting local authorities to prevent homelessness providing an environment within which to share good practice. Delegates have also reported that the NPSS conference offers increasing value for money, particularly when local authority training budgets are limited. Statistics show that 60% of all local authorities in England have attended the national conference with delegate numbers increasing year on year.
